Primal Nutrition sells a variety of Primal Kitchen branded condiments, sauces, and dressings products that all claim to be made with and contain 100% pure avocado oil. The company’s products all highlight their use of avocado oil, containing statements such as “MADE WITH AVOCADO OIL” and “NO SOY or CANOLA.” The ingredient panel lists avocado oil as its first and primary ingredient and does not list any other oil. Primal Nutrition’s marketing materials also make it clear that its products are not supposed to include seed oils.
Many consumers prefer to use avocado oil and avoid other types of oil, such as seed oils, and they are willing to pay a premium price for authentic avocado oil products.
Unfortunately, recent research from the University of California, Davis showed that several of Primal Nutrition’s products do not actually contain 100% avocado oil. By measuring the amount of fatty acids and sterols in multiple samples using gas chromatography, the researchers found that the oils in the products did not match the chemical “fingerprints” for avocado oil. According to the research, several other companies are also selling products that do not appropriately contain avocado oil, including Chosen Foods, Jackson’s, and Boulder Canyon.
Wolf Popper filed a complaint on behalf of consumers nationwide in federal court in California. The name of the case is James Deckman et al. v. Primal Nutrition, LLC, 2:26-cv-09916 (C.D. Cal.).
