Related Case: Health Insurance “Ghost Networks” Investigation
If you relied on your health insurance company’s provider directory to find an in-network doctor and later received an unexpected bill, you may have a legal claim.
Wolf Popper LLP is investigating reports that some health insurers maintain inaccurate or outdated provider directories, sometimes referred to as “ghost networks.” A ghost network exists when a health plan lists doctors or clinics as available and in-network even though they are not actually accessible to patients.
In some cases, patients select a provider listed as in-network, schedule an appointment, and receive care, only to later be told the provider was out-of-network. As a result, patients can end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars out of pocket for services they believed would be covered.
Provider directories are intended to help patients make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage. When those directories contain listings for providers who are not part of the network, patients may rely on information that does not reflect reality.
These practices can leave patients facing unexpected medical bills.
